Ganas de vivir, ganas de morir /
The desire to live, the desire to die
The work explores the life and death of the artist’s brother, shaped by his experience of living with a severe mental disorder. Through photographs, visual archives, documents, and testimonies, the project reflects on social prejudice surrounding mental health and on the experience of mourning during the pandemic.
Through portraits and self-portraits, Peñaloza reconstructs her brother’s memory, weaving together joyful and painful recollections within a single body of work. The resulting photobook becomes a space for processing grief, while also exposing the complex relationship between family life and mental illness. Photography operates here as a fragile but necessary language—one that holds intimacy, care, and unresolved questions.
